What schema does for you
Google reads your details as facts
Structured data spells out your name, address, phone number and hours in a form Google can't misread, rather than leaving it to guess from your page.
It backs up your Google Business Profile
When your website says exactly what your profile says, Google can be more confident they're the same business. That consistency is part of local SEO.
It helps AI assistants describe you
AI search tools draw on the same structured facts, so they're more likely to get your hours and location right when someone asks about businesses near them.
It doesn't change how your page looks
The code is invisible to visitors. It sits in your page's code and only search engines read it.
Not sure if your site already has it? The website health check looks for structured data on any page.
Questions about local business schema
What is local business schema?
A standard way of describing a business in your website's code (from schema.org), using JSON-LD, the format Google recommends. It tells search engines your business type, address, contact details, opening hours and more.
Will it get me more stars or a bigger listing in Google?
Not on its own. Google uses it to understand your business and may show details from it, but there's no guarantee of a special listing. Review stars about your own business aren't shown from your own site's markup.
Where do I put the code?
On your homepage, or a contact page, inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag (the generator includes it). It can go in the head or the body. Use it on one page per location.
I work from home and go to customers. What address do I use?
Use your real business address if it's on your Google Business Profile, and list the towns you cover. If your profile hides your address, leave the street out and keep the town and postcode district, and rely on the areas you cover.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No, it all stays in your browser, and it's saved there so it's waiting next time. The one exception is the postcode button, which asks postcodes.io (a free UK postcode service) for your map coordinates.
